My computer has almost constant pop-ups appearing. I have Yahoo pop-up blocker, which does not help. Norton Antivirus tells me that I have a virus that it can't get rid of. My computer is often slow and sometimes freezes. I can't afford to buy a program (poor college student). Can someone tell me how to fix this, and what's causing it; the problem has just recently started. Are there any good free downloads. Please help; I'm at my wits end with this. Thanks!

Download AVG Free from Grisoft. It is a free and easy to use. If you do that then you should get rid of the Norton because two antivirus will often cause problems. Also if you are using Internet Explorer GET RID OF IT. Download Firefox or Opera. Both have real working pop up blockers. Good Luck

boot your pc into safe mode by pressing f8 at start up. Then run your updated virus protection, spyware remover (get spybot), hijack this, sysinternals, cleanup %26 ccleaner. Doing so should enable you to remove any problems before they have a chance to "hide" from your protection.
My Sisters Dell was having the same problems so i downloaded and ran Windows One Care Live, It's a 90 day demo, but the old Dell flies after fixing it.
It does require about 5 hours or more to run all system tools, but do it overnight and enjoy a better computer in the morning.
