Is AVG and AVAST the same thing?

Ok, you guys answered me about getting free antivirus, but what is the difference with AVG and Avast? Are they together? Do I download both if there not? or are they just two seperate anti virus protection software? If so which is the better?

AVG and Avast are 2 different free antivirus apps from 2 different companies. AVG is easier to use and does not take up a lot of resources. Avast on the other hand is a better scanner but it takes a lot of resources on your PC. Having used both, I am now using a much better antivirus : AVIRA AntiVir PE. Avg pound for pound is the best out....its free and antiviruses like Norton and Mcafee cant hold a candle to it...it doesnt have as many options as the others but unlike Norton and especially Mcafee if u decide that u dont want it just uninstall it and its all gone.......Mcafee is almost impossible to get rid of.....plus w/ AVG when it finds a problem it shows u were the root of the problem is, which is nice because if for some reason Avg cant delete or quarrentine the issue it shows u exactly where its at in ur comp so u can manually delete it.....updates automatically....totally hands free.....plus its not a resource hog like Norton...Avast is another free one but it doesnt compare to AVG......u wont be disappointed w/ this program.... enjoy :)

No. These are two different products from two different companies. While AVG comes from Grisoft, Avast is the creation of Alwil.

From my experience with these two, Avast is definitely better.

But if you feel otherwise, try AOL's Active Virus Shield. This one is powered by Kaspersky and is very good. It's free and detects many viruses (virii?) undetected by AVG, Avast etc. And of course, it doesn't slow your system's startup down.
No they are not .They are av products of two different organisation. Both have free and paid version of quality anitvirus software .However Avast has higher virus detection rate and is prefered over AVG anytime.Besides it get updated more frequently

I used a program called killbox to get rid of the ones that i had. I think it's www.killbox.net, and it was amazing because i tried everything else and nothing would get rid of it and i downloaded this and it was gone
DSL or Cable should not make any difference regarding the Virus infection, but your ISP provider's server protection will make the difference. Have you tried to delete the protected files in Norton Anti-virus? You should be able to delete those files under Norton option control.

New AOL Active Virus Shield..Is it is as good as the old one?

I have been doing quite some research today. I wanted to test out the AOL Active Virus Shield Powered By Kapersky, But, When i went to its link I found "AOL Active Virus Shield Powered by McAffee".

I didn't download anything yet, and am Currently using AVG 7.5 Internet Security. It seems to be okay, but I want to use seperate things instead of an all-in-one security suite.

You shouldn't rely on a single program. There are other, free programs that will work in conjunction with AVG.

I like EMCO malware destroyer, and Microsoft's Windows Defender.

AVG has poor detection rates. The free version does not come with the ewido engine that is part of the pro version. it doesn't shape up well against other free products, and should be avoided if you want to the best protection for your machine.

Antivir is the best free one I know of. Don't take my word for any of this though, what Im telling you is not based on personal opinion. check out the comparisons here

They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. Well, I suppose the best for overall protection, would be *sigh* Norton Internet Security. But dude, only get that if security, not usability is what you're looking for. My machine came loaded with McAfee's trial version, and when it expired, I downloaded the free version of PC Tools antivirus. (mistake #1 ?)

Now I have learned I should have removed all McAfee files prior to setting up PC Tools.

I simply downloaded the new pgm. and it set itself up, and seemed OK.

Now I get pop up warnings that PC Tools version 3.1.0.17 is out of date, but when I try to update it, I get a message, "DOWNLOAD FAILED, TRY AGAIN LATER"

I've browsed "Y" Answers for info, and find most people prefer AVG, and warn that removing McAfee is difficult, and same for PC Tools.

Here's what I THINK I should do:

1. Back up files I need.

2. Download AVG to a file or a disk?

3. Download Mc uninst. tool.

4. Find a PC Tools uninstall tool?

5. Offline, remove Mc and Pc Tools. and install AVG.

6. Pray.

(system restore not attractive, because PCT was added long time ago. Also, I don't have a windows install disk)

Well it's not the best idea to have more than one AV program running at once but to have them installed, but not active? I'm not sure. I have had to manually uninstall many MacAfee products in the past. I'm almost positive this is causing all of your problems. It's a pain, but they do give you step by step instructions on their website(just find your product and search for manually uninstall). Their auto uninstall stinks it leaves a ton of registry and shared files behind and will eventually corrupt your whole system, my advice once you get rid of it don't ever install another MacAfee product on your computer until they get their crap together.

The thing is that there is a virus on my computer, and I went to all of these "free" sights to get the software and they all require me to put a credit card number in . Norton Internet Security on my new laptop?

Hello, I just got a new laptop and whenever I start my machine, I get a notification saying I should use Norton Internet Security. I haven't downloaded a free 90 day version or bought Norton yet but I still see "Norton Internet Security" in control panel -%26gt; add/remove programs. Does it mean I have it on my machine? I'm planning to use AVG antivirus but before I download it, I want to make sure I don't have another Antivirus (i.e., Norton) on my machine.

If it's in Add/Remove programs, it's installed on your machine. Use the control panel to remove it before installing AVG.

yes if you see norton in add/remove programs .. then its installed in your system ... you are right 2 antiviruses on one system is not a healthy thing ....

you need to go to control panel .. add remove programs and uninstall norton first and then restart your system ... and then install your new antivirus.

If it is located in the Control Panel, and Add/Remove programs it is on there.

There's this thing on the bottom right of my screen (windows xp) and I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be there. I cant install spyware software?

i have avg and mcafee virus software and no spyware software at the moment. when i realized that i had a virus/spyware that my virus protection cant get rid of, i tried to install spybot S%26D 1.5.2 but in the middle of the installation it stopped saying "movefile failed; code 5. access is denied" so i re-downloaded the install file from a different source thinking the file was corrupt but the same thing occurred. i also tried to install lavasoft ad-aware and windows defender and the same thing occurred, something stopped the instalation. iv ran my antivirus software multiple time and download the free scan from norton and nothing came up. i tryed making a new user acount and setting it to admin and installing it from there, and it didnt work. let me know if you need any more info, im not THAT good with comps. but i can get around

- First of all, I own microsoft Vista and used AVG free antivirus up to today.

-I always wanted to get AOL antivirus shield but never did for no reason

- so today i downloaded it without knowing apparently that it wasnt compatible with vista.

- My computer suddenly crashed after install.

-everytime i started it up it crashed before I could enter my pass to log in.

In the start menu click run and type msconfig

Under the startup tab, uncheck your antivirus.

Then click on the services tab, check the box 'hide all windows...' and uncheck your antivirus there as well.

Click apply, ok and restart your PC.

Now you should be able to remove your AV without conflicts.

First i'd try to restore my computer to yesterdays date or the day before, if that does'nt work you'll have to reinstall the computer. i suppose you've got the disk? dont worry your info wont be lost. Still unsure,check with your isp:internet service provider. Good luck

2 things you can do. Search for the file (think of the name short and simple - if looking for spyware search only spy) and also click the option hidden files. OR go to the temp folder (go to your C drive or w.e is your main driver and search in that folder.

All Files you see inside this folder are downloaded from your last visit.

You can delete from there.

Clear temp files , cookies and history to remove complete traces.

Empty the recycle bin Too.

These are all basics, but if system is infected these cannot help.

Hey Guys, me again. Look, this "VirusFighter" programme, I downloaded it from a different site and apparently it is a scam. It has clogged up my compute,r I can't Copy %26 Paste, or barely get into the internet. I suggest gathering all the files you want to keep into one spot, putting them on a disk or thumb drive, formatting your hard drive and reinstalling your OS, then scan the thumb drive or disk with a program like AVG(as you mentioned) and if it comes up clean putting those files back on... but once you get a virus they are very hard to remove depending if they infect the master boot records and program files which I'm guessing yours has.

whatever version you have doesnt matter at all unless they have its a major release which means if they have released a version 8 then you shuld get it provided they have done some enhancements in it. If its version 7.2 then its a minor version where they bascially just put few minior enhancements and some bug fixes . So in this case its just the BUILD . Both are same versions but of different build which really doesnt matter. You will still get all the updates when you open up avg.

Please review the release notes for the version and if you think there is some critical bug fix then just download it and install it. You wont need to uninstall the existing version.

My computer has almost constant pop-ups appearing. I have Yahoo pop-up blocker, which does not help. Norton Antivirus tells me that I have a virus that it can't get rid of. My computer is often slow and sometimes freezes. I can't afford to buy a program (poor college student). Can someone tell me how to fix this, and what's causing it; the problem has just recently started. Are there any good free downloads. Please help; I'm at my wits end with this. Thanks!

Download AVG Free from Grisoft. It is a free and easy to use. If you do that then you should get rid of the Norton because two antivirus will often cause problems. Also if you are using Internet Explorer GET RID OF IT. Download Firefox or Opera. Both have real working pop up blockers. Good Luck

boot your pc into safe mode by pressing f8 at start up. Then run your updated virus protection, spyware remover (get spybot), hijack this, sysinternals, cleanup %26 ccleaner. Doing so should enable you to remove any problems before they have a chance to "hide" from your protection.
My Sisters Dell was having the same problems so i downloaded and ran Windows One Care Live, It's a 90 day demo, but the old Dell flies after fixing it.

It does require about 5 hours or more to run all system tools, but do it overnight and enjoy a better computer in the morning.

Computer viruses, help?

In the past hour i've gotten so many viruses on my computer i can't even count them. First there was about 4 trojans blocked by mcafee, then a fake warning popup box, which will not go away. It keeps coming back. Another virus changed my desktop wallpaper to another fake warning, and consistent popup warnings and downloads are happening that are obviously infected with viruses. They come up every minute or so for the past hour. The strange thing is, i haven't actually been on the internet at all today, up until now.

Currently doing a virus scan with ad-aware, but last time it didn't remove all viruses. What do i do? Is there any better free antivirus programs i could use that actually let you remove the virus without having to pay?

I also get this problem when I using Avast but try using Norton anti-virus, it really can help you in "killing" all your viruses. Don't download the Norton 2006 because you gonna pay for it. Careful with some of that advice you already have been given. Not all programs will work with Windows 98.

I use Spybot and Ad Aware (both for spyware protection) and AVG Free (antivirus) on a Windows ME machine. All are free for personal use.

If you check their system requirements, you will see whether they will work with Windows 98. (It may be possible that Ad Aware 2007 will not but Ad Aware SE Personal will.) You can find these programs and more at download.com.

I do computer work and i need something that I can check customers PCs with, without installing anything on it. I know years ago, Norton Antivirus could do this, but I stay away from Norton now, it sucks.

I also know that the definitions need to be updated, but what I'll do is download the latest files and put them on the CD the day i go to a customer.

Well, I have to agree with you, all windows programs eat up tons of memory. I have Ad Aware Personal SE, but paid for it. I found that the freebies are free for a reason, they don't quite measure up. Remember, you get what you pay for or not. Go on the internet and search for anti-spyware, a loonnngg list will appear. 90% will say they are free, but read closely, if you want 100% protection all the time might we suggest our XYZ program, which costs a mere $19.99? first of all, don't download that program you mentioned (or run its scan) sounds like it's a Trojan. Research the name that appears for the "program" for instructions to remove it or repost here.

Outlook is incredibly slow when dealing with messages with large attachments. I used outlook express until about seven months ago. The speed there was better, but still not very good.

I use AVG free edition antivirus. It is set to inspect incoming messages. I turned off the outgoing scanner as it crippled the programs at times.

Is this something caused by AVG, or would it be the same with a different antivirus solution?

Put them in your Documents file then open each up and install them one at a time and run their scans one at a time and they should show you what you have. You need to remove the viruses and any worms that show up. It will take a little while, but patience is a virtue. Anti-virus will also run a scan daily, mine runs when I'm asleep. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. Most free programs that people swear by on here make me lots of money. I'm not a know it all, but what I do know is from expeirience in the field or at a work bench.

Out of the last 25-30 Virus Issue service calls:, 16 of them had free anti-virus programs.

The others were because they either didn't have any or just didn't update the big ones from Symantec and McAfee.

This is worth the purchase.

Spyware is a constant issue, and spyware programs are a good way to protect against this. There are very good free ones out there that have resolved and protected many that I serve. The main difference with this and the ones you pay for are bells and whistles. The purchase in this category doesn't give me a return vs the free ones that I would look for. (I've only tried 4 or 5 different ones that I liked)
