you could try scanning it with trend micro house call, it may find a virus also try installing Spy-bot and Ad-aware 2007 those seem to work good with my computer. the link for trend micro is below. I wish you a lot of luck on this. I have just recently heard that even the norton removal tool dose not work. You may need to find a good computer pro to manually delete it out of the registry for you.

Spybot and Ad-Aware are antispyware, not antivirus.

I think Spybot is acceptable, but (IMO) Ad-Aware is useless.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Well, I suppose the best for overall protection, would be *sigh* Norton Internet Security. But dude, only get that if security, not usability is what you're looking for. Norton is such a PITA to use, and is always in your face asking some stupid question, or blocking some port so your games don't work properly, or won't allow you to file share.

My machine came loaded with McAfee's trial version, and when it expired, I downloaded the free version of PC Tools antivirus. (mistake #1 ?)

Now I have learned I should have removed all McAfee files prior to setting up PC Tools.

I simply downloaded the new pgm. and it set itself up, and seemed OK.

Now I get pop up warnings that PC Tools version 3.1.0.17 is out of date, but when I try to update it, I get a message, "DOWNLOAD FAILED, TRY AGAIN LATER"

I've browsed "Y" Answers for info, and find most people prefer AVG, and warn that removing McAfee is difficult, and same for PC Tools.

Here's what I THINK I should do:

1. Back up files I need.

2. Download AVG to a file or a disk?

3. Download Mc uninst. tool.

4. Find a PC Tools uninstall tool?

5. Offline, remove Mc and Pc Tools. and install AVG.

6. Pray.

(system restore not attractive, because PCT was added long time ago. Also, I don't have a windows install disk)

Well it's not the best idea to have more than one AV program running at once but to have them installed, but not active? I'm not sure. I have had to manually uninstall many MacAfee products in the past. I'm almost positive this is causing all of your problems. It's a pain, but they do give you step by step instructions on their website(just find your product and search for manually uninstall). Their auto uninstall stinks it leaves a ton of registry and shared files behind and will eventually corrupt your whole system, my advice once you get rid of it don't ever install another MacAfee product on your computer until they get their crap together.

Ok, this isn't a repeat question. My computer is infected and gets the fake "Critical Error","You have Malware. Click here to download Free Spyware." The thing is that there is a virus on my computer, and I went to all of these "free" sights to get the software and they all require me to put a credit card number in . The viruses on my computer are monitoring my computer to capture my keystrokes and get cc info, so that's out of the question.
